The Way Home is fortunate to have many generous partners in the community and we would like to start 2020 by highlighting our partnership with the Houston Food Bank!
Houston Food Bank focuses on developing and providing a solution to food waste and hunger for 18 counties in Texas. By networking with 1,500 community partners, the Houston Food Bank is able to feed 800,000 individuals each year in the Southeast Texas area.
To help people experiencing homelessness, Houston Food Bank has collaborated with partners of The Way Home to feed recently housed people and sent staff to help conduct the annual Point-in-Time Homeless Count & Survey – all in the first month of 2020!
People leaving homelessness sometimes talk about the struggle to find food and clothing once they have moved into their new homes, but thanks to the partnership of Houston Food Bank, we have been able to cross hunger off the list. In January, the Houston Food Bank donated 12,000 pounds of food to a single apartment community where multiple people previously experiencing homelessness have moved into new homes. This generosity is providing people with food security and helping them continue to rebuild their lives.
The collaboration didn’t end there – Houston Food Bank also provided multiple staff volunteers to help the Coalition for the Homeless with the annual Point-in-Time Count & Survey. Not only did members of the Houston Food Bank spend one day at the Count, but they joined in on all three days and had at least four members each day to represent!
The Houston Food Bank’s selflessness has inspired us! We feel fortunate to call them a partner of The Way Home. Thank you, Houston Food Bank, for walking beside us as we solve homelessness and hunger in our region!
